Get Involved with Linux-NTFSSo, you would like to contribute. You are very welcome to. The goal of this page is to answer the first few questions any newbie may ask. We could use coders, web-developers, documentors & bug-hunters. What we have enough of: People that offer help, are replied to and then never heard from again. Before you startThe first and most recommended thing is to subscribe to the Linux-NTFS-Dev mailing list, possibly even reading the recent archived threads, to get familiar with it. How to startFirst of all, you need to decide what do you want to do. If you intend to write some code, please check cvs and/or git and pull the source. Now you can start adding features (look at todo for some ideas). When the feature is complete, send it in (patch is the guide for you). If you want to work on the documentation, do exactly as you would do for the source, only pull the “ntfsdoc” repository instead. If you want to work on the website (design-wise), contact Mario and offer your help. If you want to work on the website (content-wise), start by registering on the wiki and adding some content. When we are happy with you, you may recieve editor rights to the CMS. If you would like to do something else (helping users, bug-hunting, advertisement, janitorial tasks, sending money, etc.), you will know what to do. (and if you still don't, ask on the forums). HowTos for NewbiesHere is a short list that should help you getting started:
Any more questions should be sent to the mailing list. How do I join? There is no formal joining procedure. If you contribute in any way (even just talking), people start to know (the virtual) you. Once people become comfortable enough with you, they start to think you are part of the project. At some point you just realise that you are a member too. On the other hand you can dive into and contribute code. People will start to trust your code (docs, info, whatever) and realise that it would be easier for you to have direct CVS access. When you ask for it (and assuming you deserve it), you will be automatically added to the “project developers” section on the Sourceforge project page. And then you may consider yourself as a real member (only “may”, because this section contains some people are not active, and were active for a very short period). Sum upEverything here is done on a voluntary basis. Do something and you will feel good. Don't do anything, and you will have to search for something else to get your kicks from. If you still don't understand what can you do, don't hesitate to ask. |
