About ntfsresize

ntfsresize is a tool for safely resizing NTFS volumes. Normally, you would like to use it from inside a graphical tool such as QTparted or Gparted.

A great HowTo already exists in http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html, so there is no point to clone it here too. (2008/09/30 - site appears to be down)

Another HowTo (same author) is Excerpts from ntfsresize FAQ

Is it safe?

I trust my own data with it. Do the math.

Important: If you run ntfsresize manually (i.e. not via some frontend), remember to use the “sector” unit when editing the partition table. fdisk defaults it to “cluster” and parted default to “compact”. If you won't, you may not be able to access the partition. It isn't ntfsresize's fault and therefore we can't fix that. More info on that in the above links.
